Private Label, OEM and ODM: Choosing Your Product Approach
Compare branding an existing product with modifying a supplier design or developing a custom product, and plan the added costs.

Define the work rather than relying on the label
Suppliers use private label, OEM and ODM differently. Ask what the supplier will actually design, manufacture and own. At the simplest end, you may add your branding to an existing product. More involved projects modify a supplier design or develop a product to your own specifications.
An existing product can reduce development work, but branding, packaging and destination requirements still need review. A customized design may introduce tooling, testing, development rounds, larger minimums and longer lead times.
Request separate options
Ask for three distinct proposals where available: standard stock without customization; the standard product with approved logo and packaging; and the requested design changes. Compare development charges, MOQ, unit price, samples and milestones for each.
Clarify ownership and access. Agree who owns artwork, molds, tooling and design files; who can use them; where they are kept; how they are maintained; and whether you can move them to another manufacturer. Do not assume paying a tooling invoice settles every ownership question. If exclusivity matters, define the product, territory, period and conditions in writing.
Use your own authorized branding and check relevant intellectual-property issues before committing to production. A supplier’s willingness to reproduce a design is not evidence that you have permission to use it.
Before approving development
Confirm each item before treating the project as ready for a bulk order:
- Written specifications and approved artwork.
- Development fees and revision limits.
- Prototype and production-sample stages.
- Product-testing and labeling responsibilities.
- Tooling ownership and access terms.
- Commercial MOQ and expected reorder conditions.
Start with the level of customization your demand and budget support. Approve the production sample before treating the project as ready for a bulk order.
